Avoiding sweets but blood sugar still rising? These overlooked daily habits could be the real reason, says doctor

Every year, countless people undergo routine health check-ups. The moment the reports arrive, one number often gets all the attention, blood sugar. If it falls within the normal range, there's relief. If it is higher than expected, the first reaction is usually, "Was it because of eating too much sugar?"Sugar has long been portrayed as the villain behind diabetes, yet doctors say the condition is far more complex. Diabetes develops over time, shaped by several everyday habits that quietly influence how the body produces and uses insulin. Sleep, stress, physical activity, meal patterns, body weight and even the food environment all work together to determine metabolic health. The numbers show why this conversation matters. According to the ICMR-INDIAB Study, India is home to more than 101 million people living with diabetes, while another 136 million people have prediabetes, placing them at a higher risk of developing the disease in the coming years. The study also highlights that diabetes is affecting younger adults more frequently than before.
