Trying To Lose Weight With More Protein? Here’s When It Can Backfire

Protein is essential for muscle repair, immunity and metabolism, but consuming it in excess can cause issues, says Dr Prashant Hansraj Salvi of Jupiter Hospital, Thane. High-protein diets often reduce fibre intake, leading to bloating and constipation, while very low-carb plans may trigger bad breath, dehydration and fatigue due to ketosis and inadequate fluids. Excess dairy protein can worsen acne in some people, and cutting carbohydrates drastically may affect mood. Though moderate increases are safe for healthy individuals, those with kidney disease should be cautious, as long-term excessive intake can strain the kidneys. Importantly, protein still contains calories, so overeating it can stall weight loss. Experts recommend balanced meals with fibre, fluids and personalised guidance rather than extreme diets.
